Hyde Park
Home of the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry, Hyde Park is a beautiful neighborhood only seven miles south of the Chicago Loop. Hyde Park was founded in the 1850s by Paul Cornell and was annexed to Chicago forty years later. From 47th street to 61st street, Hyde Park is now smaller than it used to be. In its beginnings, Hyde Park reached approximately 12 miles south of the Loop.
Today’s Hyde Park reaches the Lake Michigan at east and the Washington Park at west. Over the years, people saw great things happen in Hyde Park. The World’s Fair was held in Hyde Park in 1893. The fair covered hundreds of acres. All that is now left from the World’s Fair is the former Charles Atgood's Palace of Fine Arts, today’s Museum of Science and Industry. Many famous people were born in Hyde Park, including 3 senators: Paul Douglas, Barack Obama and Carol Moseley Braun. Muhammad Ali, Marshall Field and Julius Rosenwald also come from Hyde Park. Hyde Park has many great things to offer its visitors and residents. Spend your vacation in Hyde Park and you’ll live an unforgettable experience.
