The Chicago Board of Trade was founded in 1848. Ever since then, the Chicago Board of Trade has played a major part in Chicago’s commercial life. It started by trading corn, wheat, soybeans and oats. Over the years, the contracts evolved and included non-agricultural products and non-storable agricultural commodities. The first financial futures contract of the Chicago Board of Trade was sealed in 1975. The Chicago Board of Trade ’s first electronic trading system was launched in 1994. In October 2005, the Chicago Board of Trade became a for-profit company.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the Chicago Board of Trade is a leading futures exchange. Through open auction or electronically, about 3,600 members of the Chicago Board of Trade buy and sell 50 types of futures at the Exchange. In 2005, the volume at the Exchange reached and surpassed 674 million contracts.
Every year, the Chicago Board of Trade Foundation supports several not-for-profit, charitable organizations in the Chicago area.
